Wintertime:         09:00 a.m. – 05:00 p.m.

Take U6 or U7 from Hauptwache and in 5 minutes you are at the Zoo Frankfurt. You cannot miss the stop. Beuatiful animal paintings at the walls and all over the different levels of the stop are greeting you and your loved ones. Penguin families are waiting for you at the ticket vending machines. Zebras, lions and many other animals are at the walls and the benches are in elephant shapes.

Few people know that former director of the Zoo Frankfurt Prof. Dr. Bernard Grzimek was an “Oscar winner”. Prof. Dr. Bernard Grzimek who was director at the Zoo Frankfurt for 29 years (starting in 1945) won the Academy Award “Oscar” in Hollywood in 1959. Bernard Grzimek had been awarded for his documentary film “SERENGETI SHALL NOT DIE” which he wrote and directed in co-production together with his son Michael Grzimek. In January 1959 Bernard Grzimek’s son Michael died in plane crash in the Serengeti at the age of 25. “SERENGETI SHALL NOT DlE” was also published as a book in more than 20 languages. The book “SERENGETI SHALL NOT DIE” “SERENGETI DARF NICHT STERBEN” is a classic and makes a wonderful No-Nonsense Frankfurt-related gift. In case you are lucky this very book will change your childrens’ attitude towards animals.

Visiting the zoo in winter helps you and your loved ones avoiding the crowds and provides the opportunity to enjoy all the animals which feel most lively in low temperature winter weather.

In case you are freezing because of cold weather you can visit the many animal houses or the “Grzimek Haus” the house for night-active animals. Also very fascinating is the “Exotarium” which charges an extra entrance fee. In the “Exotarium” on the first floor there is a” tropical rain” taking place daily at 11:30 a.m. and 03:30 p.m. which is very impressive … and a real adventure for your little ones. On the last Fridays of the months there are sometimes guided tours taking place and the 03:30 p.m. the “tropical rain” is moved to 07:15 p.m.  Make sure not to miss the “tropical rain” it’s really fascinating – not only for your little ones 🙂
